Year 11 Coursework Day

A full day of painting, printing, refining, annotating and collating.

This week the two main art rooms were full to bursting with two large groups of GCSE Art students as they worked outside of their usual timetables on any elements of course work needing attention. As is apparent in the images below the students chose mostly to concentrate on their 'Portraiture' project. It's a diverse theme with personal and individual outcomes. The photos below show a selection (mainly found on the drying rack) of the endeavours of the day.

Screen printing is a fast and flexible way to add another technique into a student's portfolio. The A2 size of this student's Matisse style portrait brings a dramatic and bold element to her project.

It is difficult to show the impact of art work within the pages of this blog and it's something which needs to be considered. How can scale be shown? Where possible, students, hands or equipment can be included in a photograph and the bound edge of a sketchbook automatically works as a visual guide. It also brings up the question of cropping and editing. Part of a painting can be photographed (or cropped) in order to show the texture or detail. However is this truly representing the students' intentions? Perhaps the online format allows for too much tidying and clipping? All of the following portraits below are A2 but in this case need to be viewed in person to fully appreciate the hours of skilled pencil shading the students have accomplished.
